The Netherlands has the second-highest English proficiency in the world

The Education First (EF) language company has posted its latest English Proficiency Index (EPI), ranking non-native language proficiency. The Netherlands came second in Europe and the world this year, and has actually been among the top 5 countries in every EF EPI. More details on the performance in Europe is found here.

Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Sweden, the Netherlands and the United States of America are the world’s five most innovative nations, according to the Global Innovation Index 2015, while China, Malaysia, Viet Nam, India, Jordan, Kenya, and Uganda are among a group of countries outperforming their economic peers.

Using patents to share technology

The WIPO magazine of August 2015 has an interesting article from Kyoto University in Japan about how patents are used to ensure that other researchers have access to their induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell technology. By patenting the technology, they can stop others from controlling it and they can stimulate new discoveries in this field by offering reasonable non-exclusive licensing agreements.

The European Patent Office is launching a newsletter filled with the news on the European Inventor Award. By signing up to the newsletter you will receive the latest updates on the European Inventor Award, the nomination phase, the finalists, the winners and the event. On 7 August 2015 we noted here in our blog the fact that Dutch inventor Laura van 't Veer was awarded in the category Small- and Medium sized Enterprises (here, in Dutch).

The EPO has indicated that anyone who is interested in the event, the nominations, etc. can sign up to the newsletter by filling out this online form. All you need to provide is your name, email address, language preference and choice of topics.

DeltaPatents spreekt op Live webcast over impact Unified Patent Court op Post-grant procedures

DeltaPatents spreekt op de Live webcast van The Knowledge group: "Post-Grant Patent Opposition in Europe and the U.S.". Sander van Rijnswou bekijkt de invloed die het nieuwe Unified Patent Court zal hebben op octrooi procedures na verlening, zoals EPO opposities.

Sinds de America Invents Act van kracht is bestaat er in Amerika een oppositie procedure na verlening van een octrooi. Derden kunnen de geldigheid van een octrooi aanvechten bij het USPTO zonder naar een rechtbank te gaan. De USPTO heeft al meer dan  2700 verzoeken voor 'inter partes review (IPR)' gekregen.

Het Europees octrooi bureau kent al sinds zijn start een oppositieprocedure. In 2014 werd in 2143 zaken een beslissing genomen door het EPO over een al verleend octrooi.  In deze webcast van The Knowledge Group wordt de nieuwe procedure in Amerika vergeleken met Europese opposities.

Ook in Europa staat het nodige te veranderen. Op dit moment wordt er een nieuwe rechtbank voor octrooizaken opgericht: het Unified Patent court  (UPC, eengemaakt octrooigerecht in mooi Nederlands). Op onze unitary patent blog worden de laatste ontwikkelingen op dit gebied gevolgd. In de webcast ga ik in op de invloed die het UPC zal hebben op oppositie procedures.

DeltaPatents op Technology for Health 2015 vakbeurs

DeltaPatents staat op 6 en 7 oktober op de Technology for Health 2015 vakbeurs in Den Bosch. Op de Technology for Health zijn de laatste ontwikkelingen te zien op het gebied van componenten, devices en services voor de gezondheidszorg.

Technologie neemt in gezondheidszorg een steeds belangrijkere plaats in. Op de beurs is bijvoorbeeld te zien: Embedded software, 3D printing, biomaterialen, fotonica, imaging, technologieën voor preventie en bestrijding van acute beroerte.
